My Story

Learn more about me

Photography and art have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. In 2014, I graduated with a degree in Visual Arts, majoring in painting and printmaking. I shot my first wedding that same year. The following year, I completed my teaching diploma and went on to teach art to matric learners at an all girl’s school in Pietermaritzburg.

In 2017, I realised I needed something more in my life than working an 8 – 5 job, so I upgraded my camera and started a Facebook page called Maddison Photography and started offering couple shoots and wedding photography. I booked one wedding that year, which then snowballed into 12 wedding bookings in 2018.

At the beginning of 2019, I rebranded my business to Laura Jean Photography, resigned from my teaching job, and shot 29 weddings that year. Starting my own business was one of the best things I have ever done – I haven’t looked back!

In the early days, Malcolm and I shot together and we made incredible memories travelling the country and shooting weddings together. Things changed over time, and Malcolm left the shooting to me whilst he can be found either doing a bit of work, taking his KTM on a ride or hanging out with Connor on Saturdays. Life is sweet let me tell you!

I take a candid approach to wedding photography and document the day as it unfolds. I believe in instilling confidence in my couples and doing whatever I can to help them feel as comfortable as possible. I would describe myself as calm, collected, and acutely aware of how my clients are feeling. I will never get in your way or make you do something you aren’t comfortable doing. I always put my client’s needs first and treat all weddings with the utmost love, care, and attention. It is my priority to ensure all wedding clients receive a timeless gallery of images that can be loved and admired for decades to come.

Here are some sweet words from brides I have worked with recently.
